Cristina: School was more important to me than modeling and I suggest to you that school should be more important for you. I wouldn’t suggest to any young girl or guy not to go to school, to not go to high school or college in order to pursue modeling. I think that is a very risky and naïve decision. There are some models that don’t go to school. I have met models that do this but what happens is they get to be around 25, 26 and they may have modeled all over the world but that experience in the business world means nothing. On an interview you can show them a whole lot of pictures of yourself but any corporation or large company does not care about your modeling experience. The modeling industry is too volatile and not secure enough to depend your whole life on. So you need to prepare yourself now. I have my master’s degree in criminal justice and it is not only what you are educated in but just the process of going to school that well rounds you to face the world. So I know that question will come up and I know a lot of girls when they start, they watch TV and they see models and think I want to rush and do that- but it is a good ambition to start looking into modeling but not to quit your education to pursue it. When I was in college, I wish I realized that at the time but I could have gotten with a small agency near my school and done small jobs every couple of weeks and made probably more than I did while I was waitressing. So I think that’s definitely a good combination to model while you are in school. Explain to your agency that you are in school. If you get a really great job, you could probably miss a class or two but explain to your agency that you are in school and that has to be your first priority but you would like to model as well. Another reason I talk about this is if you have your education or you have some sort of business mindset, there are other things you can do while you are modeling. You don’t have to just be a model. I have always done other things. They can be related to modeling but it is nice to have some sort of job and a lot of models do this. They have some sort of job that’s flexible so they can do both. In New York many of the models I know have their own companies; like they will either be a real estate agent or web developer, some do software programming. That way they are able to go to castings and do their modeling jobs but still have another job bringing them consistent income.
